Motivation is a myth!

Okay maybe that title was a little clickbaity but I think it's mostly true.

Last night (Sunday evening) I watched a few of my favourite fitness influencers on YouTube smashing marathons and Ironmans and thought 'Yep, tomorrow I'm getting up at 5:45 and smashing out an early session to kick start my week'.

Cue 5:45am this morning and it's cold, wet, dark and I'm tired (Scotland in October hey).

I sat outside the car park of a commercial gym for 5/10 minutes before driving away.

Sound familiar?

I know many of our members have experienced similar before they joined us.

They maybe do what I did and drive away or they go in and go through the motions before getting frustrated they aren't seeing any results.

It's a vicious cycle!

I then went along and jumped in the 6:30am class at Elevate98 and felt fantastic after (shameless plug).

All joking aside I think there are two things to consider with this:

-Motivation comes AFTER action.

I think many of us wait for that spark of motivation to get kickstarted whereas in reality we need to do something before we are motivated in order to become motivated!

This is something we see all the time. People drag themselves kicking and screaming to the gym but afterward feel amazing and book 3 more session for the rest of the week.

-Systems are your friend.

I'm pretty sure the people that joined me in that 6:30am class didn't feel super motivated either upon waking.

But what they did was tied themselves into it when they felt more motivated by pre-booking the class!

Booking a session or event, organising training with a friend or joining a coach-led facility are effectively ways to 'outsource' your motivation because you have something that makes it less likely you are going to cancel.

We are better at keeping promises to others than we are to ourself!
